Masters of Fashion

Three fashion grad students living out their last semester in style

Spring break is coming to an end, and it was a definitely a busy one for me, full of more conference than vacation.  I had the opportunity to present some of my preliminary findings on my thesis on the California Transparency in Supply Chains Act and the UN Guiding Principles at the Intertek Ethical Sourcing Forum in New York City this past week.  This conference was an amazing opportunity to meet and hear from a large amount of the leaders in corporate social responsibility in a variety of industries.

Here are some pictures from the conference, Greg Yahr from the AAFA presented on initiatives looking at environmental impacts in the apparel industry, like the Sustainable Apparel Coalition.  Joe Sibilia, CEO of CSRwire, talked about the enthusiasm and growth of CSR in all industries.  And there was a panel discussion on brand collaboration, especially within conflict minerals.  Representatives from Chrysler and ITC (International Trade Centre) were on this panel.

After the conference, I stopped by the Tracy Reese office to say hello to some of my old coworkers and Tracy.  Turns out Sheena (the Tracy Reese Trims Designer and of Mojito Nails) was wearing a vintage dress similar to my Jason Wu for Target dress, so we took a twinsie pic!

For my presentation of the conference, I wore my Jason Wu for Target dress with my H&M jersey blazer, black tights, and black Tracy Reese mary janes.  Kept it simple and comfortable.

That’s been my spring break!  Now that classes will start up again, we’ll start posting on our usual frequency.  Hope you didn’t miss us too much!

This week I’m sporting Color Club’s “Peace Out Purple” from my Birchbox.  So obsessed with this color!!!  However, it is a little streaky without two coats and takes a while to dry (had a few mess ups!).  I’m also thinking it might look awesome with some orange tips…perhaps that’ll  happen later on in the week…

Hi, friends!  I’m Tricia, and it’s very exciting to be a guest blogger on Masters of Fashion.  I am not getting a Master’s degree in fashion (far from it…I recently finished my Master’s degree in international public health), but I have known Tiffa since I was a wee one and lived with her past year.  This relationship has instilled upon me the confidence to wear whatever I want, and a desire to avoid looking aesthetically insulting.  In my spare time, I run http://stickersanddonuts.com/ and collect pictures of sad animals here: http://humiliatedanimals.tumblr.com/.  I also make hair accessories for my etsy shop (http://www.etsy.com/shop/anandamides), a project that’s currently on hold because I unexpectedly moved across the country a couple of weeks ago! For those of you who have a short chipmunk attention span like me, this is a brief summary of myself:
LIKES:
My teal moscot glasses
Trader joe’s dark chocolate salted caramel bars
My banjolele
Metal riffs and loud music
Stirrup leggings
DISLIKES:
Fabric print with colored brush strokes and streaks/tiger strips of white slashed through the print. You know what I’m talking about.
Flip flops
The person who stole my new iPod touch last week.
The picture above is from THREE weekends ago-my first weekend back in Baltimore after doing fieldwork in Vietnam and being unemployed in California.  Despite my heightened ability to handle cold weather from years spent living in Illinois and upstate New York, I was still extra sensitive to the “nice” weather in Baltimore. Thus, I met Tiffa and Marielle in Fells Point buttoned up in a navy Anthropologie/Cartonnier Easton Cropped Peacoat and knuckle tattoo mittens by Father Panik.  These mittens are my favorite thing to wear in the winter, and having missed out on all the cold weather in Vietnam/California, I resolved to wear my mittens even if it was 70 degrees.  The champagne-colored lace shorts are by Collective Concepts from Piperlime, which I wore over legging tights from H&M.  My shoes are ASOS’ Aiden leather lace up brogue boots, which have unfortunately seen better days, and perhaps makes me like them more.  So I can remain dark and moody despite the cheery Baltimore sun rays, I am hiding behind prescription Ray-Ban New Wayfarers.  The scarf is from H&M, and the bag is from dubious origins in Vietnam.

At times when I’m bored, instead of emptying the contents of my pantry into my stomach as I often mindlessly do, I grab some nail polish and back away from the kitchen.

Today, I used my Sephora by OPI polish colors ‘Charge it!’ (gold) and ‘It’s Bouquet with Me’ (glitter). I always get compliments on my nails when I wear this color combination and of all the color combinations I’ve tried, the glitter looks best on the metallic gold.

Now my nails can sparkle as I type my thesis this week during Spring Break.

Just some Karl Lagerfeld.

Been working on the spring bow ties for knot by TIFFA!  These lovely mint bow ties would look great with Mikahila’s pants!

Achew! After the sneezing, fever, chills, and body aches of yesterday, I felt ten thousand times better today. Though my advisor did suggest that I see a doctor because my cough sounds pretty bad : /

Despite my coughing and sneezing I was able to dress myself this morning. I wore my Gap pants which I’ve owned for 8 years (these were not purchased as part of the colored jeans trend is my point). My denim button-down shirt is from Target as is my brown knapsack. The shoes are from Avenue - love them, they are sooo cute and comfy!

I’ll be napping until midnight when I go see Hunger Games! Yes, I read the books.

Recently I signed up for BirchBox, and it seems like there’s a lot of curiosity around this concept.  You pay $10 a month and every month you receive a selection of beauty product samples.  Now, as a beauty products junkie, I was all about this.  Mikahila signed up for a similar to concept, and so we thought we could compare the two!
I haven’t used some of the products yet, but here are my initials thoughts:
Tea Forte: Since I don’t drink coffee, I do enjoy tea, so I’m pretty excited about getting the tea samples!  Also, they’re supposed to be good for your skin.  The flavors sound delicious as well, cucumber mint, cherry marzipan, and honey yuzu.
AHAVA Moisturizer: Apparently this has Dead Sea Minerals.  It feels and smells like a normal lotion.  My hands have been dry though, so it’s nice to have a small travel lotion to keep in my purse.
Annick Goutal’s L’eau D’Hadrian:  This scent isn’t for me, it’s too old smelling.  I like something lighter, also there’s not a lot of depth to scent.  It’s pretty much one note.
OROFLU DO: I believe this is a hair serum, but there wasn’t a lot of information about this product.  It does smell wonderful though, I can’t quite describe it (apparently it’s vanilla amber), it just smells nice.  I’ve tried this once, and it took a little frizz out of my hair, so I guess it works!
Jouer Moisture Tint:  Haven’t tried this, but I’m pretty happy with the MAC Mineral Foundation, so I’m not sure if I will be giving this one a shot any time soon.
Color Club’s Peace Out Purple:  Pretty psyched about this sample, as I love the color in the bottle!!  Can’t wait to try it out, will probably use it next week, so will let you know what I think!!
Overall, I’m pretty happy with this Birchbox, and I will be using most of the samples throughout the month, and we’ll see if this leads to any buying decisions.  I’m still debating if it’s worth my $10 a month, for now, I’m content, but we’ll see as the months continue.

So today was another day full of advisory board events. After teaching my class, I ran over to catch the UDSAI presentations, in which students were presenting their research and projects that specifically related to social responsibility or sustainability in apparel. There’s some really great research going on at UD including sustainable leather tanning! And of course, Archana was presenting her thesis research on a home work initiative in India (which I’m sure she’ll tell more about).

Since I wasn’t presenting today, I decided to go a more casual route. I wore my Frenchi printed blouse with a nude cami from Target underneath with my Uniqlo jeggings and Aldo platform sandals. I sported my mint A.J. Morgan sunglasses which coordinate well with my Mint Candy Apple toes. My hot pink lip is MAC’s Nicki Minaj lipstick, with MAC’s Enchanted on top. I’m completely obsessed with this color!

Well, that’s my Wednesday outfit, can’t wait to wine down this Wednesday at the Stone Balloon!
